Comparing the Behavioural Effects of Exogenous Growth Hormone and Melatonin in Young and Old Wistar Rats
نویسندگان
چکیده
Growth hormone (GH) and melatonin are two hormones with quite different physiological effects. Curiously, their secretion shows parallel and severe age-related reductions. This has promoted many reports for studying the therapeutic supplementation of both hormones in an attempt to avoid or delay the physical, physiological, and psychological decay observed in aged humans and in experimental animals. Interestingly, the effects of the external administration of low doses of GH and of melatonin were surprisingly similar, as both hormones caused significant improvements in the functional capabilities of aged subjects. The present report aims at discerning the eventual difference between cognitive and motor effects of the two hormones when administered to young and aged Wistar rats. The effects were tested in the radial maze, a test highly sensitive to the age-related impairments in working memory and also in the rotarod test, for evaluating the motor coordination. The results showed that both hormones caused clear improvements in both tasks. However, while GH improved the cognitive capacity and, most importantly, the physical stamina, the effects of melatonin should be attributed to its antioxidant, anxiolytic, and neuroprotective properties.

Effect of exogenous melatonin on growth, electrolyte leakage and antioxidant enzyme activity in rosemary under salinity stress
Melatonin is a new plant hormone that plays an important role in stress tolerance. For investigation the effect of exogenous application of melatonin on salt tolerance in rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis L.), a factorial experiment was conducted in a completely randomized design with three replications. The first factor was melatonin (50, 100 µM) and the second factor was salinity stress (6, 9,...
متن کاملDevelopmental effect of light deprivation on synaptic plasticity of rats' hippocampus: implications for melatonin
Objective(s): There are few reports have demonstrated the effect of a change-in-light experience on the structure and function of hippocampus. A change-in-light experience also affects the circadian pattern of melatonin secretion. This study aimed to investigate developmental effect of exogenous melatonin on synaptic plasticity of hippocampus of light deprived rats. Materials and Methods: The ...

Objective(s): to investigate the chronopharmacological effects of growth hormone on executive function and the oxidative stress response in rats. Materials and Methods: Fifty male Wistar rats (36-40 weeks old) had ad libitum access to water and food and were separated into four groups: diurnal control, nocturnal control, diurnal GH-treated, and nocturnal GH-treated animals. Levels of Cu, Zn sup...
متن کاملInvestigation of the growth rate and secondary metabolites content of Lepidium sativum under exogenous melatonin treatment
Medicinal plants are rich sources of secondary metabolites. Lepidium sativum possess active compounds and secondary metabolites, including polyphenol, anthocyanin, flavonoid compounds, which are of special pharmaceutical and economic importance. Melatonin as bio-stimulator compound has a regulatory role on the amount of secondary metabolites and plant tolerance to environmental stresses. In thi...
متن کاملPineal and Hypophyseal Responses to Selenium Treatments in Light Deprived Adult Female Wistar Rats
Dark is a generally known potent stimulus for melatonin secretion. Studies have also reported that pineal and hypophyseal endocrine secretions are influenced by nutritional factors. The study was designed to investigate the combined effect of selenium supplementations and light deprivation on pineal and hypophyseal secretions in female Wistar rats. 36 female cyclical Wistar rats were divided in...
